Walk summary
Have to say these two Marilyns where a lot easier than anticipated. The weather forecast was dreadful but surprisingly it was dry driving to Mynydd y Lan. Evenso I could see the black clouds and rain heading my way and true to form it arrived just as I was about to set off. The forecast was rain all day, but it was not raining on the drive there so I thought it would pass.
Well it did not. 40 minutes later I set off for the Mynydd y Lan in the pouring rain that turned into freezing rain on the summit. By the time I returned to the van 1¼ hours later it had stopped. Yippee.
Stayed dry on the drive to Mynydd Machen. The hardest part was navigating the narrow roads and bridge over Sirhowey River from Cwmfelinfach to the west. I think it would be easier to approach from the east. In fact I recommend it.
I could have just walked ¾ miles up the concrete drive to the aerial masts near Mynydd Machen and back but chose to continue over the summit and return around the bottom to the east, as I much prefer a circular walk if I can manage it. It also stayed dry on the walk but started to rain as I was enjoying a hot cup of coffee in the van after the walk.
All in all very lucky with the weather.
